Third post! The weather was great. After leaving Christchurch, I plan to visit the touristy sites of Lake Tekapo. The route was straightforward, and there weren’t many to choose from. Less uncertainty means more relaxation!
I didn’t take the fastest route to Lake Tekapo because we took a detour to see Rakaia Gorge and Mt. Hutt.
Attractions:
- Rakaia Gorge (Mt. Hutt)
- Geraldine
- Lunch at Fairlie Bakehouse
- Gem Alpaca Stud (https://www.gemalpacas.nz/): happy alpacas 🙂
- Burkes Pass
Lake Tekapo
Accommodation: The town is small, so as long as you can book a place to stay, it’s fine!
Attractions:
- Lake Tekapo
- Track to Mt. John Observatory (1h30 one way)
- The Church of the Good Shepherd
- Dark Sky Project (https://www.darkskyproject.co.nz/): I didn’t book this one because I had already booked the tour at Mt. Cook. However, since the sky isn’t guaranteed to be clear every day, consider booking multiple tours if you’re determined to see the dark sky.
Dinner:
- Blue Lake Eatery & Bar (https://www.bluelake.kiwi/): Highly recommended
The Alpaca Tour and Lake Tekapo were both highlights of this part of the trip. My only regret is that I didn’t take my tripod with me for filming the night sky at Lake Tekapo. Although the iPhone’s night mode still produced decent photos, they could have been better with a tripod.
